Symptoms that went away on their own?

Postby katy on Fri Sep 07, 2007 6:26 pm

My son who is almost 3 years old, had a high fever for about 6 -7 days. During those seven days, he also had a horrible looking rash. It covered his chest, belly, back and groin area almost completely - it was very blotchy. It also spread up his neck, behind his ears and on his face. He had slightly bloodshot, puffy eyes. His tongue had a white coating on it. He complained almost continuously about a stomach ache and also passed a lot of gas. The fever was reduced or eliminated by motrin. There were times when the fever went away on its own for a short time but then returned. By day 7, the fever was 101.3 but had been as high as 104.1 during the first few days. On day 2, we went to the ER. They tested for strep, it was negative. They did a CBC which they said indicated a viral infection. After fluids and motrin, his fever disappeared and they sent us home. But this was before the rash appeared fully. At the time we were in the ER, he only had a slight, sandpapery looking rash. It is now day 8 and he has been fever free for 24-36 hours. All symptoms have disappeared except a slightly enlarged gland on the back of his neck (not quite the size of a marble). His doctor said he could feel several slightly swollen glands in his neck. Also, about three weeks ago, he was treated for a very swollen node in his neck with anibiotics - the swelling and discomfort got better very quickly. Could it all be related? I am so worried that he has KD but isn't being treated. Does this happen? Should I be insisting on cardiac testing? Does this sound like KD to you? His doctor feels it was just a nasty virus since the fever appears to be gone. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

This is Nancy, moderator of "Ask the Expert". I understand your concern and need for answers, but, this is not the type of question for the KD forum "Ask the Expert"....for two reasons:

1-none of our physician experts can recommend treatment for a child they have not personally examined...and therefore, the experts can only answer general questions from parents

2-this is very important--our expert physicians volunteer to answer questions for us--response times may vary from two days to several weeks, based on their own schedule and commitments...our physician experts strongly feel that no parent should ever wait for a forum answer to make treatment or other care decisions for their child.

IF you feel your child needs further care--PLEASE go directly to the emergency room of a Children's Hospital if you are not getting the answers you need from your pediatrician.

I wish you and your child well, and am sorry not to provide further assistance at this time,
Nancy
