Hi,
My three year old recently had KD treatment, just out of hospital yesterday. The IVIG (300ml) was meant to have be infused over 12 hours - this is standard treatment plus asprin across UK. However, the pharmacist got her sums wrong so it was pushed through in six hours. Any thoughts on this anyone?
Many thanks
Anthony

Re: IVIG
My son was diagnosed 1 year ago and also was treated with IVIG. The doctor's and nurse's explained to us that it was infused so slowly (my son's took almost 14 hours to infuse) because of the risk of side effects. He was given Benadryl and Tylenol before the IVIG started to decrease the risk of any side effects or adverse reactions. They also explained that IVIG is antibodies extracted from the blood of potentially thousands of donors. So this could cause reactions when infused. My son's temperature started to rise and he started getting really restless and started crying in the first hour so they slowed down. The nurse said it can cause headaches.
I'm not a doctor, but would guess in the long run that it's better that he did have the IVIG in the right dose even though it was set at the wrong rate rather than not have it at all in order to decrease the risk of cardiac complications. Hope your little one didn't have any adverse effects.
