KD without fever?

Postby cox » Sat Jul 11, 2009 4:36 pm

Is it possible or does anyone know anyone who has had KD without having a fever? My daughter had a weird rash all over her belly but worse in groin area, was itching like crazy for a day or two, I noticed her tongue looked different than normal (after seeing a picture it could be the strawberry tongue), and now her fingers are peeling really badly. Last night she did have an upset stomach and in the middle of the night threw up. Her peeling started 3 days ago. I hate to be a hypocondriac but I wouldn't want to not be worried and have something really be wrong. She's in good spirits, just weird things happening here & there. Thank you for all the information.

I didn't think it was possible, but once before when it was questioned a parent said that their child had KD without fever. It would be extremely rare, but not impossible.

A case of KD without fever:

I do not believe the fever is technically mandatory though it is expected even in incomplete KD with 2-3 of the KD diagnostic criteria.

Recently, my oldest daughter of six had a wicked rash that covered her entire torso and she had two blood shot eyes. This occurred about 2 days after passing a 7 day stomache flu that went through everyone (5 ppl) in the house. We went to emerg where they freaked out on the rash and thought she had something terrible. The doctor expected scarlet fever based upon what he saw but was startled when the nurse stated that she had no fever and that she felt fine. She got a prescription for 5 days of steroids (prednisone I believe) as the doctor treated it as an allergic reaction but wanted us to be prepared for getting our regular doctor on top of this quickly. The steroids cleared everything up but you could tell when she needed another dose for the first few days.

If your daughter still has symptoms, my opinion is that you should push for a test of the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) which is a decent indicator of KD.

my son had high fever day 1 - then it went away..
lymph node, red eyes, red lips and strawberry tongue (started as just a darker looking red ) eventually the white spots,(truly like a strawberry)
no fever again - until 2 days after all symptoms.only in the middle of the night...it would drop steadily over night..
then finally full blown high fever - that I couldn't stay on top of with the tylenol - I left my house with is temp at 106 - they didn't register a fever on him an hour later at the emergency room though --(they barely put the stick under his arm- but still) he was treated with very little documented fever..

I hope that helps..my gut is to err on the side of caution now..every symptom was explained away but it was critical to get the early IVIG treatment..
I hope that helps..
