Appendectomy before KD diagnosis - anyone else

Post by Pstirlingfox »

Last Tuesday our 6year old son had abdominal pain that was persistent - took him to a clinic where we were told to take him to a hospital if symptoms got worse. Did that in the afternoon but were sent home b/c he didn't have classic appendix symptoms. That night, fever spiked and pain worsened so we returned to hospital where he was admitted.

After blood tests, X-ray and ultrasound, it was determined that his appendix was inflamed and so they did surgery to remove it that afternoon (Wed).

Following surgery, pain and fever persisted even through pain meds, and we all thought it was just recovery from surgery (gas pain, etc.) Then vomiting and diahrea developed and nurses/doctor speculated that it was due to the antibiotic medications or possibly he caught a virus.

On Saturday, everything was worse - he was in pain, fever, couldn't move, bad diahrea, not eating, started getting listless, and rash on body developed. Finally Sunday, the classic KD symptoms developed, including red eyes, strawberry tongue, red and bleeding lips, swollen feet. As soon as the attending paediatrition saw his eyes and tongue he diagnosed KD.

And thank heaven - just in time to avoid another major abdominal surgery - they thought he had an obstructed bowel as it showed up so distended in X-ray. After receiving his IVIG treatment Sunday night, the inflammation in the gut reduced dramatically, and most symptoms reduced - fever gone. He is still in hospital (a week later) but starting to eat, walk and talk again.

Did anyone else have appendectomy or other surgery b/c of KD not yet being diagnosed?

Also, I'm really worried about bring him home and having recurrence of fever or other symptoms - how long did it take after IVIG for redness symptoms to go away completely?

Didn't progress as far as surgery, but my DS presented like appendicitis, too. Abdominal distention also present, naturally since his internal organs were inflammed. It was the acuity of a young ER physician who finally nailed it after several days and after a series of classic signs one after another instead of all at once. I'm so sorry to hear that your son underwent surgery and wish him a speedy recovery. What an ordeal for all of you.

Yes! My son had a needless appendectomy. I try to look on the positive side- at least they took something he doesn't need, right? I feel that they treated him correctly based on his symptoms and the CT scan, so I am not mad about it. Frustrated, but not mad.

My son had an appendectomy in kindergarten and Kawasaki in 1st grade. I always wondered if there was a connection between the two.
