Cocksackie virus and Kawasaki

My son was admitted into the hospital a week and a half ago on the suspicion of Kawasaki disease. (Prolonged fever, red eyes and had a red rash on palms of hands that started the day before fever onset and only lasted 3-4 days) After a workup the doctors said he didn't meet the criteria and felt strongly it was just a virus, possible 2 back to back. About 2 days of being fever free after having fevers for 12 days he developed a few small dots on his hands, toes and roof of his mouth. At about the same time the skin on his hands started to peel. Our pediatrician felt the spots looked a lot like cocksackie virus or Hand Foot Mouth Disease. We still were unsure about Kawasaki so we request a repeat echo at 2 weeks out from start of fever and it came back good. We did have blood work done also and his sed rate went down a bit to 26 but his platelet went up to 668000. My sons dots on his hands and feet and roof of mouth only lasted a few days. But now I have hfmd. Way more spots then my son but no fever. So idk if he could have Kawasaki and cocksackie also. And we repeated bloodwork just yesterday which is the beginning of week 3. Sed rate 8 and platelet came down only slightly to 644000. Do you think Kawasaki is still possible?

The cardiologist seems to think we have nothing to worry about because the doctors at the hospital didn't diagnose him. It seems like everywhere we turn we are not taken seriously. I might add that my son is feeling good.

Kawasaki Disease is an acute illness, children will recover with or without IVIG treatment.

the difference between children treated with IVIG and children not treated is the increased risk
of coronary artery aneurysms in children who do not receive IVIG.

So, feeling good is not necessarily a sign that he did not have KD

I would ask pediatric cardiologist about an echocardiogram to check for any changes that might indicate KD if
I were you...

Yes I agree with you completely. We had an echo in the hospital which was good and we did another one week after that was good. You had to push for the second one because cardiologist didn't think it was necessary. We also will see a rheumatologist next week and at that time we will push for another echo. We will be in about the 4th week by then.

Sorry, I didn't realize your child already had 2 echocardiograms.
I doubt you will get another one Even with definite KD, it is 1st echo at time of diagnosis, 2nd in 2 weeks from
diagnosis and 3rd in 8 weeks from diagnosis. Not at 4 weeks unless significant changes on 1st or 2nd ones.
And rheumatologist doesn't order echocardiograms
