INTERNATIONAL KD SYMPOSIUM in TAIWAN

Post by Momcat » Sun Mar 16, 2008 12:21 pm

I look forward to seeing articles or hearing from anyone who attends this symposium (for physicians/scientists), it is in April 2008. (Wish I could be a mouse and listen in on it!)

Dr. Jane Burns and Dr. Jane Newburger are both scheduled to speak at the conference. I wish there was some way that we could hear what is discussed!!

Hi

Unfortunately...because the Symposium is all about research and not necessarily answers...and designed for professionals only...
very, very little information is released to the general public :(

I attended the KD Symposium in San Diego in 2005 and NO newspaper reporters were allowed in and NO press releases were given...

That being said: it was the most memorable experience in my life ! ! I was able to attend the professional sessions and sit quietly
in the back row...and watch "Science in action" as KD physicians and researchers from around the world presented their latest work
and on several occassions, even disagreed with each other :) We met Dr. Kawasaki, which was a trip highlight for Jason ! We heard
Jane Burns, Jane Newburger, Stan Shulman, Anne Rowley, and Brian McCrindle speak and met them also :) We watched and listened as
physicians and researchers from ALL around the world came together in ONE room to talk about Kawasaki Disease ! It was extraordinary !
Jason (who had KD in 2002 and was ten years old in 2005) commented that it was "the first time I have ever been with people who ALL
know about KD and understand it)...

Hopefully, the American Heart Association will again post abstracts...but, that is likely all that we will hear from the Symposium...unless
one of our members attends...

My son had his appointment with Dr. Brian McCrindle this week, we were talking about the symposium. Sick Kids Toronto (Dr. McCrindle) is presenting 25 papers, along with his presentation he will be making. We will be meeting up with him after the symposuim for a presentation for the "Iromman for Kawasaki" fundraising that KDCanada did, I can hardly wait to hear all about it.
Please if any member attend, keep up all posted!!

Thanks
Pauline

My wife and I attended the symposium. There is so much research covered I wouldn't know where to start if I had to summarize it. If you have any questions about specific areas I can look through the materials and give you my opinion. I wasn't there for every presentation but I would say probably 75% of them. I may have dozed off during some of them also, Taipei is exactly 12 hours difference from the east coast where I live, the time change was a killer.

Hi Alan,
I am wondering if the specialists are still not mentioning joint problems as a long term issue? It seems like it was news to them at one of the KD symposiums a couple of years ago. Do they recognize joint pain as a symptom with some of these kids, years following KD?
Do you remember anything about bypasses, stenosis probability, or anything related to long term aneurysms?? I could ask you a hundred questions, but I promise to keep it down to fifty or so!!

Hi Alan:

Do they have any long term study updates, new conclusions on LT management?

I'm jealous! It must have been exciting to be in the midst of the discussions!!! I know it is daunting but please try to summarize as much as you can remember!

Thanks!
Charlene

Sandy/Charlene,

I am at work now and I don't have my notes or the conference literature with me. I will look this weekend and post whatever I can find. Off the top of my head, I don't remember anything about joint pain, but there was research on bypass, stenosis and treatment of aneurysms, this was mostly done by the Japanese and Taiwanese doctors. I will have to check to see about Long Term management, the problem that I see most of the studies having is one of the big issues with KD. There aren't alot of patients for the studies.

Hi,

If you go to the American Heart Assoociation site,

http://www.americanheart.org/presenter. ... er=3051323

there are links (on the right) to all the KD abstracts and highlights from the symposium. Interesting stuff!

Thank you for posting that link, that is much better summary than I could have ever given!
