Hi all. My name is Mike and my son's name is Jack. Jack was diagnosed with Kawasaki disease August of last year just prior to his 3rd birthday. THANK GOD we had a pediatrician who was married to an infectious disease specialist and it was diagnosed in about 5-6 days. His 3 days in the hospital were so difficult but we are so grateful he appears to be ok. He's had clean tests from the cardiologist.

After getting home I googled causes of Kawasaki disease. The first thing that came up was an association with carpet cleaning.

My heart sunk to my stomach. It was only 2 months prior that I added upholstery spot cleaning to the services my furniture repair business provided. The only thing I ever brought into the house was the odor neutralizer. I was swamped with guilt and have since educated myself and switched everything over to TRUE non-toxic cleaners, though I would still never bring anything near him again.

I was curious if any of you all had your carpets or upholstery cleaned just prior to you child's condition.

My sincere prayers go out to all of you who are suffering.

You will find that many of us had our caprtes cleaned prior to the kids having Kd. we had our carpets cleaned a week before my daughter came down with Kd last August at the age of 8months.

I'm glad your son is doing well! Thank goodness your pediatrician knew the symptoms of KD and acted so quickly!!

My son Bobby was diagnosed with a typical KD at 3 months old. Unfortunately he was also resistant to the treatment and developed giant aneurisms. We have never had our rugs cleaned. Also, my husband as a child used to clean carpets with his father and was exposed to at least 20 times as much carpet cleaning solution....The trigger for KD is still uncertain. The only thing that appears to be known for sure is that KD children come in contact with some antigen/or combo and their immune system goes crazy.

Please don't beat yourself up @ exposing your family to carpet cleaners. There is additional information that you may want to review in "General Discussion", especially CARPETS..posted by Tinkerbella.

I am thankful that your son is okay. Our son was diagnosed back in December when he was 2. He also has no heart damage.

I know that they say that carpet cleaning is not the culpret but anyone who says that their child was not exposed to recently cleaned carpet - how do they know? At church? At a day care? A relative? Anywhere could be and they don't know it.

My son slept on my sister in law's floor over Thanksgiving holiday. He started developing symptoms the Monday after Thanksgiving. She had her carpets cleaned two weeks before. Granted, I do think that some kids are susceptible while others are not. My other son slept on the floor too, and he's fine.

But, don't feel guilty. Anything can make our kids sick at any time. Just be thankful that he's okay!

Hi Mike,
I might be one of the few who did not have carpets cleaned. My son, Connor, was 5 months old when he was diagnosed with KD after 3 weeks of misdiagnosis. You can read my story on page 5 under Connors Story. He is now 2 and has 9 aneursyms. He is on 1/2 asprin, plus Coumadin plus Zantac daily. He looks like a happy 2 yr old, its whats inside that people cant see.
Hope Jack is doing well. You can email me anytime if you have any questions.
Internet is very helpful for all concerns. I learned that any little thing you dont think is right with your child, you need to call the doctor with. My cardiologist is wonderful, and he said to me,parents know when something is wrong with their child. You need to speak up with any concerns. My family to yours will keep you in prayers. Email if you need anything.

My son Tyler had KD in 2003. We did not have our carpets cleaned. As a matter of fact our house was under construction and most of it did not even have carpet.

I do not have carpet or upholstery as well.. but on the day when she fell ill.. we went to a new shopping mall. If it is really related to carpet cleaning it could be perhaps be related the renovation tat was in completion in the mall...

We did not have our carpets cleaned and no one in my family did either. We all have hardwood floors and I use non toxic cleaners. Tyler stays at home with me and is in no daycare settings. He was not anywhere near carpets or cleaning agents for that matter prior to getting KD. It's just so frustruating sometimes to not know what happened but do not beat yourself up about it! In my honest opinion, I don't think that carpet cleaning has anything to do with KD but I do think that the chemicals are bad for you and you should limit your exposure. I am so glad everything is ok with you!

My 9 year-old niece was just diagnosed with KD two days ago. She has been battling symptoms for a week and a half. The carpets in her house were cleaned within 30 days of her getting sick. She sometimes sleeps on the floor too.

Hi, glad to hear that your son is doing well. My son had KD last May (a month before his 4th birthday). Our house is all hardwood, therefore no carpet cleaning. Several of my family members found research to support the 'carpet cleaner theory'. We had been at the local library (fully carpeted) a day prior to the onset of symptoms. My daughter who was 9 months old at the time was also with us. Both were on the floor reading books and playing. Who knows if it was something in the carpets there? I don't know of any cleaning that had been done there either. My daughter (knock on wood) did not get KD. Recently my 2yr. old nephew was diagnosed and treated for KD. My sister mentioned having her carpets cleaned approx. a month ago. Could it be coincidence or a genetic component? I appreciate these types of forums to share ideas and stories.....many thanks!! Jodi

My daughter was diagnosed July 2, 2007 on day 5. She is three years old. She suffered major complications, Congestive Heart Failure, Pulmonary Edema and Pleural and Pericardial Effusions. She was in the ICU for over a week and in the hospital for almost three weeks. She is doing just fine now!

I never had my carpets cleaned, nor is there any carpet at her daycare.

I think that some have had exposure to carpet cleaning and some have not. You would probably find if you did a study that there were many things all of us had in common when our children got ill.

We are adopting a little girl who had KD when she was 3 years. unfortunately her parents didn't ket her to the hospital in a timely manner and she was very ill for a long time and was in the hospital for weeks. She to was in a home that had their carpets cleaned just prior to her becoming ill, but I have been told by doctors that there is no significant "same" factor in all the carpet cleaning coincedences prior to contracting KD. Feel assured, cleaning your carpets was not the factor, but changing to organic is a great way to avoid other chemical contact! Our little girl is nine now and very healthy. She too had an aneurysm, but it seemed to disolve this last year. We are hopeful at her next echo that it will still be gone. Her anuerysm didn't show up until 6 months afterwards. We pray daily for all the children of KD to be healed.

Our Ella was 11 months. We too were blessed by great doctors and early diagnosis. We never had our carpets cleaned but her daycare did. Don't know if thats it or just a coincidence. Has her 6 month echo this Thursday and all seems to be well.
