Help

Post by Kellie Hughes » Sun Jun 03, 2012 9:28 am

My 3yr old son was diagnosed with KD 18 months ago,he had two lots of imiglobin, and has been left with a small anyruism,he was on asprin for 12 months but has now been taken off it. He is still has check ups every 6mths. Every time he goes to the swimming baths he ends up not well, upset tummy fever and generally unwell. Any one know if this is linked to KD?

I don't think the swimming is related, I've never heard of anything like that before associated with KD.
However, I am concerned as to why they would have taken him off the aspirin if he has an aneurysm?

hi

there was an article out in today's newspaper about how unhealthy public swimming pools are....are you referring to a public pool ?
It said 1 out of 5 people interviewed admitted to urinating in public pools, as well as a variety of other bacteria brought in by people :(
I would imagine that any mild illness or feeling unwell after being in a public pool is related to the contents of the pool, not having
had KD 1 1/2 years ago ! (just one of many reasons I prefer the ocean !)

More importantly, I agree with Momcat...why would a child with an aneurysm be taken off of aspirin therapy ?? Was this the
decision of the pediatric cardiologist or the pediatrician ?? I would call and check with your child's pediatric cardiologist tomorrow !

Hi thankyou for your post's. It was the cardiologist that choose to take him of the asprin in Feb this year, after a heart scan and ECG,but we still have to go back in August for a check up. The anruysium is on his left artery and was 2.4mil in size.
Do you know if a child that has had KD is more prone to illness than others?

Hi,
I hv been the silent reader after my bb was down with KD on early Mar'12 when she was 15mths. I'm also wondering if her immune sys has been affected after the KD as 2 days ago PD told her she is having the lactose intolerance problem. I'm very worry if they are related.

As for the swimming, I try not to as due to KD, few of the vaccination has to be postponed which I worry she might get less protection against some virus.

hi

I know as a mom it is hard not to worry after your child has KD ! (but it does get easier over time )

If your child had IVIG, if anything...their immune system receives a temporary "boost" from the IVIG that lasts about 3 months !

RE: swimming...measles and varicella (chickenpox) are the only immunizations that are deferred (for 11 months) after KD

I'd think it highly unlikely a child would encounter either measles or varicella while swimming :) And the aerobic exercise is very
good for children (and adults ) !

Hi ,
Thanks for the advice. I just can't stop worrying when my little girl has showns discomfort, if the sickness is related to KD??
I am from Asia and in fact under the good care of her PD and the medical service here, I should be rest assured.
I do not have anyone to talk to other than her PD about KD as it is considered rare here .

Thanks for the advice.

My daughter had KD when she was 8m, and she has been swimming since she is 2y, 3 times per week; she is 4y now and besides the occasional flu she's been fine. We live in Ecuador, and we have the same humid weather all year round, which helps in bacteria proliferation, so I don't think KD would make kids more prone to illness (or she would be always sick). Either way, every kid is different, KD was caught in different stages, etc; so I think It would be wise to consult with your doctor. About lactose intolerance, my little girl had the same problem, and the doctor sent her a lactose free milk formula, the thing is she also has severe constipation problems, so a specialist changed her 6 months ago to a new formula, that contains lactose. We were worried at first but apparently she tolerates lactose now!!
