Need a professional carpet cleaning service

Post by mamafang » Mon Jun 29, 2009 2:59 am

I am not sure if this is a proper outlet for my request but I can't can't trust all the company claims and ads on how organic or natural their carpet cleaning services are. My 18 m.o. son was diagnosed with KD this past April. He had since recovered after the IVIG, aspirin, and 3 days of hospitalization. It's time for the carpet to be cleaned professionally for warranty purpose but there is still possibility of linkage of KD with carpet cleaning. . . . Can anyone suggest a reputable company for deep steamed cleaning on carpet in Walnut, California? Thank you.

"Since 1967 Kawasaki Syndrome has claimed more than 120,000 children in Japan and has spread to more than 40 countries. The Japanese use very little carpet in homes, schools, and businesses. Japan has experienced nationwide epidemics in 1979, 1982, 1985, and 1986." http://www.carpetbuyershandbook.com/car ... ndrome.php
It is true that there has been no definitive link found, yet there are many posts worldwide where parents suspect recent carpet cleaning plays a role. To meet warranty, my opinion would be to find the most harmless cleaner available - no microbiocides (particularly ortho-phenylphenol) or antifungals in the cleaner if possible. Who really knows what happens if your child has some unknown infection and inhales vapours from a disintectant? Would you meet warranty if you rented a cleaner yourself and just used steam without chemicals?

Thank you for the post. I actually had a guy from Coit came out and promised a "pure steamed cleaning" without any chemicals. He said he would have the water tank rinsed prior to my service to ensure there is no chemicals or detergents but water. I am wondering if any other KD parents has used their service and were satisfied with the outcome. Unfortunately, I need a receipt from a professional carpet cleaning company to maintain the warranty. Thought about replacing the carpet with wood flooring but the carpet were just put in 10 months ago. . . .

My son was treated 7 years ago after playing on freshly cleaned carpet. So I was worried about getting the carpet cleaned for the first time. But we needed to do it so here is what I do whenever we need our carpets cleaned. First I try to do it on the first open time in the morning that they have. Then I take the kids and leave for the whole day. If possible we will even go out of town for the nite or weekend. Just to make sure that the carpet has time to dry. When we do come home I make my 2 youngest (9, 12) (others are 22,20,18) stay off of the carpet as much as possible for the next couple of days. I make them wear socks on there feet when they are walking on it and absolutly no sitting or lying down on it till it is completely dry. Some people think this is overboard but it makes me feel better so this is how I do it. The chances are on your side that everything will be fine. Like I said just try to let the carpet dry well before the kids play on it. Good luck!

It is a local company called Paradise Carpet. We live in La Quinta Ca. which is just east of Palm Springs Ca. We clean our carpets every 4 months and I trust them. Where do you live? Maybe I can recommend someone in your area!

We live in West Covina/Walnut CA which is about 25 miles east of downtown LA. We have had a rep from Coit came out and promised a deep steamed cleaning with water only. I would appreciate any referral that you can make. Thank you.

I think it's very important to be aware that Kawasaki has been linked to carpet cleaning that was done with ONLY WATER and no chemicals. It has also been associated with living near bodies of stagnant water and vaporizer use, so it likely has something to do with bacteria, not chemicals. Since it's usually associated with steam cleaning of carpets, I believe the thinking is that the machines may be dredging up bacteria, germs, dust mites, who knows what from the depths of the carpet and the steam is making these nasty particles airborne. I'm sure professional steam cleaners are much safer than the rug doctor that was used a week ago and allowed to fester, dirty, at your local hardware store until you rent and use it. But the MOST IMPORTANT thing to remember is to stay off and keep your children off the rugs for at least four hours after they've been cleaned. You should also open the windows if you can. Good luck.

I don't think the chemicals or type of cleaning make any difference. I think it is what the cleaning DOES--somehow agitates something, whether it's mold, spores, dust mites, allergens, or some other organism that lives in carpets/curtains, etc I don't know but what I do know is that out of all the studies......it didn't matter whether they just steam cleaned with water, used cleaning sprays, foams, powders, or professional chemical cleaners--the kids in Colorado and New York still had a high correlation of KD after any of these.

I have washed my carpets since but I have my kids stay overnight at my in-laws and I open all the windows and put on the fans to air it all out well. I don't know that we can be anti-carpet cleaning as it is not practical but I know that we have never had any trouble cleaning and we have always done it this way. Then last summer, we moved into a rental house where they just cleaned the carpets the day before and shut up the house...two weeks later, my son was profoundly ill. We will never know but rather than ignore it, I am careful but not overly neurotic or paranoid about cleaning them again. I also asked his preschool to notify me when they clean the carpets.....I will keep him out a couple days, nothing drastic.

The first thing allergists & asthma specialists ask parents to do is to REMOVE carpets and curtains if at all feasible. This is because they harbor numerous organisms that trigger allergies and asthma. KD is an autoimmune disorder that has a HIGH rate of ATOPY, or allergic tendencies such as seasonal allergies, asthma and Eczema which are also autoimmune disorders. I suspect this is the relation somehow but they just haven't connected the dots because they are looking at the wrong problem--dust mites, mold, etc rather than the trigger for the allergic response. Hopefully, my graduate education will allow me to study this further because I am eager to find the cause just like everyone else.

Best of luck,

April

Thanks to all that reply to my post. We have decided to go with Coit this time and I will try to keep my son out for the rest of the day. I will report back should anything happens. Good luck April in your graduate studies.

What does warranty mean? I'm not sure what you mean by that, ((sorry)).

If the carpet was put in 10 mos ago then why does it need to be cleaned already? My husband used to clean carpets professionally many years ago and he said the longer you wait to do that first carpet cleaning, the better it is for your carpet. I wouldn't clean it for a couple of years.

Don't be silly! It is not anything to do with carpet cleaners or cleaning. They told me this 26 years ago. The young resident said they could not figure it out so they gave all these familys (in Oregon) whose children had KD a very long survey trying to find what they had in common. One thing that showed up was a lot of people happen to clean their carpet. Most of America (unless they are nasty) clean their carpet. What else do children at age under two have in common. Ask yourself???? What are some in the autism community thinking? My daughter now 28 years old received her fourth one_____ and ran a funny little ruematoid fever six weeks with a stomach ache before she came down with KD and was in the hospital for two weeks. When my daughter turned five and rceived her fifth one------- she passed out and ran an fever of 105 My son received. When my son received his third one ------- he had a stroke and ran a fever off and on for six weeks, and then had a big epiliptic seizure and ran a high fever for a week. The ped kept telling me "Well if it don't stop in two days come back!" He told me that three times till I threw away the tylenol and gave him asprin. My son to this day had epilepsy and high functioniong autism. What do they all have in common. what is repeatly given to them. Is carpet cleaner put directly into thier veins?

It is not the carpet! It never was the carpet! It is the vaccines! Even as far as 6 or 7 weeks out from the intial shot! It is the vaccines!

26 years has pass, and parents of children that came down with KD are still asking what is the safest way to clean carpet. What happened to me, should not have happened. It I had understood my daughter's cause of her illness, it could have saved my son.
best wishes,
to you and your little one
